Saturday, July 4th: NW Rock Legends Jr. Cadillac on the Marina Mainstage, 8-10pm Mark your calendar now! Des Moines Arts Commission proudly presents Fireworks Over Des Moines headline entertainmers Jr. Cadillac and their danceable mix of classic and original rock from 8-10pm leading in to the fireworks at Des Moines Marina (22307 Dock Ave S.) on the Fourth of July. Get to the Marina early, bring a blanket or lawnchair, and enjoy fabulous music followed by a unique vantage point of fireworks displays up and down the Puget Sound. |

Saturday, July 18th: Professor Humbug’s Traveling Flea Circus Performance Times T.B.A., hosted at the 50th Birthday Celebration Downtown Des Moines Young and old alike agree…Professor Humbug’s show is Unique, a Victorian style Flea Circus that features a Daring water tower leap, high wire artists, feats of strength, and a Flea firing cannon Finale! Humbug has performed in Korea and Holland, and has never failed to delight even the most skeptical of people! “Professor Humbug’s Flea Circus” is a favorite at the Dickens Festival-Galveston, TX & other annual festivals worldwide! |

Saturday, July 18th: Pony Boy All-Star Band, 11am-Noon on the Marina Mainstage/22307 Dock Ave S. The Pony Boy All-Star Band, http://www.ponyboyrecords.com/files/big_band/big_band.html, is a conglomeration of the best professional musicians in the Seattle area. Led by drummer/arranger Greg Williamson, this collection of musicians is truly All-Star. The 17 members have played with The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd, Harry James Orchestra, Count Basie, Natalie Cole, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Diana Krall, Steve Allen, & Ernestine Anderson. Hosted as part of the City of Des Moines 50th Birthday events on July 18th, the Pony Boy All-Stars will hearken back to the early incorporation of Des Moines with their amazing library of arrangements dating back to the original swing hits of the 40’s - all the way up to today’s large jazz ensemble orchestrations.

Comedy Night in Des Moines Friday, October 9th, 2009. 7:30pm at Des Moines Field House/1000 S. 220th St. This 2nd Annual Event will feature a family friendly performance by comedienne Susan Rice (www.susanricecomedy.com). Susan has performed on ABC for prestigous producer George Schlatter of "Laugh In" fame. She has also appeared on evening at the Improv, Showtime's Comedy on the Road and the Reunion Show & Comedy Express for Fox. Advance purchase tickets ($10) available Aug. 2009 at the Des Moines Field House. Tickets will be available at the door for $15 or $10 if you show your ticket from the Des Moines Sr. Center’s Spaghetti Night. The opening act to be announced at a later date. |

Current Projects
Honoring Aging Mural Project for QFC’s N. Facing Wall at 21815 Marine View Drive South With funding from the Des Moines Legacy Foundation, the Des Moines Arts Commission has worked to select an artist and project proposal to adorn the wall across from Big Catch Plaza in Downtown Des Moines. The site was identified by the University of Washington’s Storefront Studio Project as a prime location for public art for its visibility and location near Marine View Drive. A mural dedicated to honoring contributions of older citizens will be installed in the near future. Completion date is to be announced.
Public Art Collection Catalogue and Virtual Tour Arts Commissioners are at work creating a catalogue of city art work, including wonderful & rarely seen works located inside city buildings. The project will culminate with a virtual tour of the City of Des Moines public art collection, available to the public for viewing by visiting this site in the near future.

Des Moines Arts Commission Vacancy
The Des Moines City Council is accepting applications for potential candidates for appointment to an unexpired 3 year term on the Des Moines Arts Commission. The Commission meets on the 2nd day of the month from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Des Moines Activity Center. For information regarding Arts Commission programs please go to www.desmoineswa.gov/artscommission.
Applications will be accepted until 2 p.m. May 31, 2009.
